Why Canelo-GGG 2 has to happen in May

September 16, 2017 will forever be remembered as a controversial date in the boxing world. A highly disputed draw between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Gennady "GGG" Golovkin sparked a huge interest in a potential second fight. Both fighters seemed eager to prove to the world once again who the better man is. But the question still remains, when will the second fight happen?
The obvious answer and the one that makes most sense is May 5, 2018. Both parties are in agreement of the date but as always, personal interests become setbacks in negotiations. "GGG" feels he earned the right to be the A-side. As for "Canelo", he's been a household name and the cash cow for years, headlining Pay-Per-Views every May and September since Floyd Mayweather retired.
As time goes by, fans are growing anxious. They still don't know for certain who the better fighter of the two is. It's become a hot debate in the boxing community, but for how long?
The wait for the first bout to occur was already long enough. If Golden Boy and K2 Promotions want their event to be a success, they may have to do the impossible to make this fight happen in May. The promoters might even want to take this fight to the east coast (Madison Square Garden) and add great young talent to the undercard to give the fans a bit more than what they paid for.
Whatever the situation may be behind closed doors, the only date that makes sense for Canelo-GGG 2 is May 5. Any later date could still show good earnings, but it may be too late. Fans waited an eternity for the first, they will not wait as long for a second.
